Annotated Transcript
This annotated transcript page highlights all the courses I took toward earning my Master of Arts in Education (MAED). Here you will find a summary of what each course focused on, and how it changed or helped improve my instruction. Although I will be graduating in 2018 from Michigan State University (MSU) with a Master of Arts in Education, my journey toward earning my master's began in 2014 at Central Michigan University (CMU). I originally intended to get a degree focusing on reading and literacy instruction before shifting my focus to technology and finding MSU to be my home for the completion of my master's program. Therefore, that is why you will see that three of my master's courses are transferred from CMU.

EDU 590 Advanced Technology in Education
Central Michigan University
Instructor: Rob Alford
Semester: Fall 2014
This was an introduction course to incorporating technology in instruction. There were assignments that required me to reflect on technology access and learning the challenges of incorporating technology if factors such as funding is not available. I learned about designing lessons and presenting instruction in a different way to students using technology, such as through creating lesson activities with the use of webquests. Overall, EDU 590 was the first course toward my master's that left me wanting to answer, "what other ways can I incorporate technology in my instruction?"
EDU 636 Classroom Reading and Writing Instruction
Central Michigan University
Instructor: Dr. Tamara L. Jetton
Semester: Fall 2014
This course focused on best practices in reading and writing instruction for early and adolescent learners. There are many stages to effectively learn how to read and write in which we learned. Specifically, it was discussed how reading and writing is a process, and how one step leads to the next. Much of the course focused on reading instruction including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and vocabulary. After completion of this course, I gained a better understanding of every facet of reading instruction and the importance of teaching it in a step by step process.
EDU 635 Problems in Language Arts in the Elementary School
Central Michigan University
Instructor: Dr. Lee Rose
Semester: Spring 2015
This course guided me to analyze and discuss problems teachers face teaching language arts. Some factors that affect student learning in Language Arts that were discussed included cultural differences, English as a Second Language learners (ESL), and students with Learning Disabilities (LD). The course discussed strategies and techniques in differentiating and supporting all student differences. Although I changed the shift in my concentration after this course, I gained a much greater understanding of the challenges I might face and how to approach every student need.
CEP 815 Technology and Leadership
CEP 815 Technology and Leadership
Michigan State University
Instructors:
Dr. Benjamin Gleason
Dashika Delshan Cosby
Semester: Spring 2016
This was my first course after transferring to MSU and changing my concentration to technology. I learned the basics of teaching and learning, and how technology comes into play in the classroom and instruction, as it can be both a positive, and negative if used incorrectly. I learned about ways to support my colleagues, and give input in school improvement as well by creating a professional development presentation highlighting the use of a technology tool of our choice in the classroom. While I did not intend to obtain a Master of Arts in Education to gain leadership skills, this class left me eager to collaborate and share what I had learned with my colleagues.
TE 831 Teaching School Subject Matter with Technology
Michigan State University
Instructor: Dr. Douglas Hartman
Semester: Spring 2016
As I continued my master's work at MSU, this course provided me with several different tools and strategies to incorporate technology in all school subjects. I was very excited for this course, as I knew the future might take me into a new position teaching different content. This course taught me strategies and techniques in taking what might have been a simple paper/pencil lesson in the past, and modifying it to include technology. I learned about and shared several "tech tools" with my classmates that could be used to enhance instruction in every subject. At the end of this course, I was eager to implement new tech tools into my classroom to enhance my lessons.
ED 800 Concepts of Educational Inquiry
Michigan State University
Instructor: Dr. Steven Weiland
Semester: Summer 2016
In this course, inquiry was defined as “the ways that people search for knowledge of teaching and learning, organization and leadership in schools, local and national educational policies and their consequences, and more.” In this course, I read many articles and educational stories to reflect on the process and practice of teaching and learning from both the educator and student point of view. This course had me reflecting on how did/do I learn and how might that affect the instruction I give my students compared to how they learn? At the end of this course, I found myself being more compassionate toward understanding the story of each individual student.
cEP 813 Electronic Assessment for Teaching and Learning
Michigan State University
Instructor: Paul Morsink
Semester: Summer 2016
This course was one of the most memorable courses I completed at MSU. As educators, we all know that learning is a process, and formative assessments are one of the best ways to keep students learning and allow teachers to modify instruction. Every assignment in this course had the opportunity for us to receive feedback on all our work, improve upon, and resubmit for an official grade. Throughout each of these assignments, we learned a variety of ways to receive and give formative assessments or feedback to students, a culminating project that included the use of Content Management Systems, which are digital programs or websites that allow you to create and manage digital content, such as the tech tool google classroom. Taking this course reminded me of the importance of constant, positive feedback and regular formative assessments.

TE 855 Teaching School Mathematics
Michigan State University
Instructor: Michael Gundlach
Semester: Fall 2016
At the time of taking this course, I was a 6th grade math teacher, so naturally, the course was intriguing to me and taken in hopes of learning strategies to teach math more effectively. This course discussed more than the title suggests, focusing on how different students think as mathematicians, and the history of math topics and instruction. Once we know the different ways a student might view or approach a math concept, we can more accurately differentiate and approach math instruction. I also researched and reflected on a technology tool that might improve math instruction in my classroom. After taking this course, I looked at teaching math to my students in a much more individualized way, and taught my instruction in a more purposeful way.
TE 861A Teaching Science for Understanding
Michigan State University
Instructor: Meenakshi Sharma
Semester: Summer 2017
With the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) being adopted into instruction, this course provided me with a very different approach to teaching science content. NGSS standards are taught in overlapping strands, and instruction is meant to be focused around student discussion and questions. I learned strategies to create an NGSS centered unit, one in which is more student led than teacher led. In the process of creating this unit, I learned the importance of effectively setting up activities and guiding instruction, even if student led, to create a successful unit and understand the required science standards. After completion of this course, I found myself applying student led learning and discussions in all other subject areas as well.
ED 870 Capstone Seminar
Michigan State University
Instructors:
Dr. Matthew Koehler
Spencer Greenhalgh
Sarah Keenan-Lechel
Sukanya Moudgalya
Semester: Summer 2018
My Master of Arts in Education program ended with this capstone seminar. This was the "culminating activity" of courses that required me to reflect on my process of earning my master's degree. It allowed me to highlight my success as an educator and learner by thoughtfully creating a digital portfolio. As an educator, I was able to place my teaching philosophy, and highlight my experiences in the classroom. As a graduate student, this portfolio allowed me a place to showcase all that I learned and will take away from my master's program. Overall, this course made me reflect on how the completion of my master's will benefit both me and my students and gave me a final portfolio that will be something that I can revisit, revise, and share with colleagues, administrators, and parents.
